Research and planning - mama film poster

Mama Movie Poster

- The 2008 film Mama has got many films posters. However, I found this one had more of an effect towards the audience. The USP of the film poster has differences within the conventions of a horror genre film as the antagonist of the film isn't shown, only a middle shot of her body with the girl grabbing onto her arm with a worried look on her face. This shall make the audience apprehensive and shall want to know what the antagonist appearance is like. This shall create more of a suspense towards the audience. Horror genre film posters usually tend to show a small bit of the antagonist within the film poster or something which resembles the name of something involved within the film. -The way in which the film is called 'mama' the way the girl is holding the antagonists hand links with this as it looks as if the girl looks up to her and depends on the antagonist to look after her which gives the audience some insight to what the film is going to include within the film.
- The colour used within the film poster are low light colours which connote mysterious and a dark atmosphere within the film which tends to be the conventions within a horror genre film. However, there is use of high light colours around the antagonists arm and the child which highlights the fact that shes an important character within the film and the film poster wants the audience to see the emotion on the child's face. The emotion infers to the audience that shes worried and scared either of being without the antagonist which is 'mama' or scared of not being normal and being controlled by someone and just wants to get out of it which is a convention of a horror genre film as its shown in horror genre films to have the victims wanting to get away from the antagonist.
- Overall, the film poster conveys the conventions of a horror genre film. The film poster is showing whats going to be included within the film but doesn't give too much away which is the way theres suspense towards the audience which shall make the film popular and successful within the film industry.

- The film poster of the 2008 film Mirrors uses the conventions of a horror genre film. The uses of the colours of the film poster instantly hooks the audience towards the film and implies to the audience that is a horror genre film. The use of the colour red connotes evil and danger which is what is stereotypically known to be included in a horror genre film. The colour red stands out from the rest of the poster as the background colour uses low key lightening as its got the use of dark colours which include dark grey and white which creates a tense atmosphere and separates the title from the background as they infers a balance with a use of low key and high key lighting which makes it easier for the film name and title to stand out towards the audience which shall make them remember it and shall want to go and see the film which shall help publicise the film and create a fan base before the film is released. The way the title of the film Mirrors is position in a way where the two R's of the film which are facing each other which resembles the mirror of the film as it looks like a reflection and looking in the mirror which links with the trailer of the film as it shows the reflection of the characters looking in the mirror which makes it clear for the audience to understand the film poster and trailer and an idea of what the film is going to include throughout the rest of the film.
- The effect of the young boy with the reflection in the water included in the film poster creates a eerie atmosphere and links with the reflection of the name of the title and shall intrigue the audience as the the boy with the water shall be something which is shown in one of the clips throughout the film. The reflection of the boy in the water links what what is resembled as mirror as its a reflection.
- The use of the two main character's persona and body language within the film poster creates a sense of uncertainty as they are positioned and have the body language of looking apprehensive and anxious as to what the young boy is doing. Whereas, there is a contrasting link to what the body language infers towards the audience as they are shown as having the dominance and authority over the young boy which infers towards the audience that they are the protagonists or his parents.
- The USP of the film is 'Keifer Sutherland' shown at the top of the poster which signifies that he is a well known and important part to the film and within the film industry as he is a well known successful actor which shall make the audience already have an opinion on the film and shall make it have a fan base already before its released within the film industry.

The edit of  the colour of the film starts with a daylight effect then goes to a night effect when the main character enters the isolated empty warehouse which is a convention of a horror genre film. As the warehouse is abandoned it infers that something has happened within the warehouse and location. The use of mise-en-scene with location is a stereotypical location and setting for a horror genre film. It creates suspense towards the audience. By using a well known character which is shown as the protagonist of the horror film. By having a well known actor which has been in many other successful films which shall make the film already have a fan base which shall make the film popular within the film industry. As the trailer carries on it continues being dark and is mysterious towards the audience as it is a convention of a horror genre film. It pans around the warehouse. As the camera is using a middle shot going across the warehouse theres natural light going through the caps within the warehouse which infers that it could be old or the warehouse is haunted which shall create suspense towards the audience which is what horror genre films do within the film industry.
- The trailer then cuts to the picture of the distributor of the film which is 20th century fox. The trailer doesn't give to much away it just infers and clearly shows the victims of the film and whoes the antagonist which creates more understanding of the film so the audience have a brief idea of what the film is going to be about and what they shall expect within the rest of the film.
- The trailer infers to be based on one family and shows that they are the victims as shown within the trailer when they cut to each of the mum the dad and the son looking in the mirror with another one of themselves which is moving differently to them which shall be the antagonist.
- The edit of the film uses jump cuts with fast pass which builds up tension towards the audience which is used towards the end of the trailer where is has fast thumping music which cuts from clip to clip within the film.
- The trailer ends with an explosion of mirrors which infers that the protagonist saves his family and the other victims. - The use of mise-en-scene within the trailer is used with high quality. It includes a horror genre location which has two main settings which tend to be a convention of a horror genre film. - The character within the film poster is dressed in white pyjamas which shall infer to the audience that she could either be controlled by the antagonist as she looks to be asleep or that shes sleep walking as shes having nightmares of the antagonist as she is a victim or being told what to do by him. Furthermore, the fact that the character is dragging blood against the wall with the image of the antagonist created within the blood shall infer that she is sleep walking and that she is possessed. The way her face is turn away from the audience shall make the audience question whether she looks evil or possessed. The way her face is turned and how the blood has smeared into the face of the antagonist shall infer towards that audience that she has been taken over by his evil entity. The way the girl has bare hands always links to her sleep walking as running blood across a wall with bare hands isn't a normal thing to do which infers that she is now the victim of the anatgonist.
- The colour scheme consists of the red, white and grey. The white infers a clinical type of feel to the poster. Whereas the use of the colour grey shall link with darkness, uncertainty and acts to the dark events which are going to take place within the film. Furthermore, the use of the colour red is presented within the blood the girl smeares over the wall with her bare hand. The colour red connotes blood, passion and gore a common colour used within horror film posters. Red and grey are conventionally colours within the horror genre however white isn’t as conventional and is usually reserved for use as text which contrasts with black backgrounds.

- The use of the font style of the title is a normal standard title setting for a horror genre film. It links with the blood over the walls as the black smudges of the text shall look as if the girl has smudged them which shall create more suspense towards the audience.
- Overall, the film poster uses the conventions of a horror genre film with the use of where the film poster has used its setting and location and the use of mise-en-scene which is important within a horror genre film and within the film industry.
