Research and planning- Safe haven analysis





- The 2013 film 'Safe haven' is a romance genre film. The director of 'Safe haven' is Lasse Hallstrom which is a well known director what has directed many successful films within the film industry which include 'Dear John' 'Salmon fishing in the yemen' and 'The hypnotist'. The film stars -
-Julianne Hough,
-Josh Duhamel
-Cobie Smulders.


- The beginning of the trailer doesn't infer to the audience a typical romance genre film. As we see a women which looks to be running away which shall be considered as a USP of the film as the trailer doesn't give to much away about the film and what type of genre it is at the beginning. The use enigma code makes the trailer build up which shall engage the audience to know what the film is going to be about so that they shall be involved within the film. The conventions of a romance genre film is seen as having emotion which the audience shall gather from this.
- The narrative of the film includes the conventions of romance genre film as it has an idyllic setting where its sunny friendly town which infers that shes going to find happiness there which is a convention of a horror genre film within the film industry. The trailer includes clips from what looks like to be her past where she cuts her hair and dyes it blonde which infers towards the audience that she wants to make a change and start a new life as her past seems negative. The trailer then cuts to a over the shoulder shot of the women and man which meet  to a closeup clip of a the man who the women is going to fall in 'love' with. Then theres a closeup shot of the man whoes looking through a window staring at the women which infers that something is going to happen between them which is a convention of a romance genre film. The trailer shows the man and women meeting in various places where the audience shall instantly see that there the main characters and that there going to fall in love and some form of relationships going to happen. The conventions of a romance genre film includes a twist where theres something bad which happens which builds up to a happy ending which is what is included within the film which infers that its a typical romance genre film.
- The use of mise-en-scene within the trailer is a typical convention of a romance genre film. The use of clothing of what the characters wear are normal standard clothes which doesn't infer there status of class as the little town or village there are located in and live in seems to be happy and people with similar status. It doesn't show that its a wealthy village which doesn't infer a 'perfect life' which is positive towards the audience as the film shows that you don't have to be happy with being wealthy you can have happiness when you share it with someone you love. The use of body language within the trailer infers emotion and love and connection between the man and women. The lighting of the trailer contrasts between the trailer where the beginning of the trailer is dark and doesn't look like the women is in a good place whereas, the middle of the trailer then goes to a light which infers happiness and that shes in a good place which is what the conventions of romance genre film are.
- The use of sound within the trailer includes non-diegetic and diegetic sound. Where they use an emotional soundtrack throughout the trailer then uses the speech from the main characters which gets the audience more engaged and involved within the film and the characters which helps them understand whats going to happen during the rest of the film. Which is a convention of a romance genre film which shall make it successful within the film industry.
